Short Description:

Book Description

Africa’s development agenda is shaped by a convergence of global, continental, and national frameworks. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a universal blueprint for addressing poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, violence, and weak institutions. At the continental level, the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want articulates a long-term vision for an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens. In South Africa, the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 sets out a strategic pathway toward eliminating poverty, reducing inequality, strengthening state capacity, and building a capable developmental state. This book is grounded at the intersection of these three frameworks. It recognises that while the SDGs offer global goals, their effective implementation in Africa depends on alignment with Agenda 2063’s aspirations—particularly inclusive growth, good governance, peace and security, gender equality, and people-centred development and with national development priorities such as those articulated in the NDP 2030. The volume provides a comprehensive, African-centred analysis of all seventeen SDGs, with a particular focus on governance, gender equality, safety, justice, and social justice. Drawing extensively on African and South African experiences, it examines how institutional capacity, ethical leadership, community participation, and multi-stakeholder partnerships shape development outcomes. This book is intended for academics, postgraduate students, policymakers, development practitioners, and civil society actors seeking to strengthen policy coherence between global commitments, continental aspirations, and national development strategies.
